For the Dough
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
- ⅓ cup sweetened condensed milk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
For the Egg Wash
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy, confirming the yeast is active and ready to leaven the dough.
- Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture, sweetened condensed milk, egg, and softened butter. Stir until the ingredients come together, then knead by hand for 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook and knead for 5-7 minutes.
- First Rise: Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover it with a cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 30-45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release air. Transfer to a floured surface, shape into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan. For buns, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces, shape each into a ball, and place them spaced on a greased baking tray. Cover and let rest for 15-20 minutes for a second brief rise.
- Apply Egg Wash & Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the top of the loaf or buns with the egg wash made from egg yolk and milk. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool & Serve: Remove bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely or slightly before slicing. Enjoy warm or at room temperature for a soft, delightful treat.
Notes
- Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
- Use bread flour for a chewier texture or all-purpose flour for a softer crumb.
- Do not skip the egg wash; it helps achieve a beautiful golden crust.
- If you want sweeter buns, you can brush with honey after baking while still warm.
- Store bread in an airtight container to keep it soft for up to 3 days.
- For longer storage, slice and freeze the bread, then toast slices before serving.
